I’m an open education practitioner and FOAMed advocate working in higher education where most of my experience has been in medical education and in the application of technology in learning and teaching.  More recently I’ve taken on a central University role, leading on technology enhanced learning, which has given me the opportunity to work across different academic disciplines.  Still learning is a space for me to reflect on and share some thoughts on educational practice and issues that interest me as well as to connect and have conversations with individuals with similar interests.

I first became interested in digital education when I was involved in the Masters in Medical Education distance learning programme at the Medical School at Dundee.  After working on an international collaboration in eLearning medical education for several years I went on to become a lecturer in eLearning in the undergraduate medical curriculum.  During that time I led the development of MedBlogs, a WordPress-based VLE, to support the delivery of the 5 year undergraduate medical curriculum and was involved in designing and developing e-learning in medical education.

I’ve had a long standing interest in the use and role of social media in digital scholarship and in learning and in 2015 I was named in Jisc’s 50 most influential higher education professionals using social media.  In March 2018, together with Pat Lockley, I co-ran PressED, the first Learning and Teaching Conference to be run on Twitter.  PressED included keynotes and sessions exploring the role of WordPress in supporting innovative pedagogies, communities of practice and research in higher education.

My teaching with medical students has focussed on developing students as digital teachers and digital resource developers.  Other key interests include interprofessional and interdisciplinary learning.  I’ve been part of a collaborative project team with colleagues from Dundee Medical School and the School of Pharmacy at Robert Gordon University looking at developing realistic interprofessional learning between medical and pharmacy students.  More recently I’ve worked with colleagues from Art and Design, Medicine, Nursing and Social Work to run the Global Health Challenge.  This extra curricula activity involves groups of students working with local health related agencies on a wide range of health challenges.
